Considerations

  • Plates, bowls and cutlery made from biodegradable plastic, compostable plastic and bioplastics are banned in NSW from 1 November 2022.
  • A product must comply with Australian Standard AS 4736 for industrial composting or AS 5810-2010 for home composting.
  • Look for verification of this claim, such as the seedling logo. Ask the supplier if you’re unsure.
  • Plan how the items will be composted, and any suppliers you may need to help you.
  • You may also think about other single-use item alternatives you need, and whether you can compost the items with the same supplier.
  • Lastly, consider packaging. Look for paper and cardboard packaging that are either certified under recognised forest certification scheme (e.g. FSC or PEFC) or contain recycled content. Also check with the supplier if the packaging can then be reused or recycled.
