Considerations

  • A product must comply with Australian Standard AS 4736 for industrial composting or AS 5810-2010 for home composting.
  • Look for verification of this claim, such as the seedling logo. Ask the supplier if you’re unsure.
  • Consider how the cups will be composted, and any suppliers you may need to use.
  • Consider other single-use item alternatives you need, and whether you can compost the items with the same supplier.
  • When purchasing, ask the supplier to send items with minimal and non-plastic packaging. Request that paper and cardboard packaging are either certified under recognised forest certification scheme (e.g. FSC or PEFC) or made from recycled content. Check with the supplier if the packaging can then be reused or recycled.
